The Good Samaritan

A while ago, I had to cruise downtown to acquire some records from my local courthouse. Finding parking was a real treat, I found a spot around 15 blocks from where I needed to be. Or maybe I was exactly where I needed to be. You decide.

While walking towards my destination, I came upon a clearing that exposed a small park. The park was in the form of a square with various trees and shrubs, plus four benches, two of which were occupied. Each one had a homeless man in it. The men were seated, looking forward, as if watching a movie at a theater. Only there was no theater screen in front of them, just a busy street. There was a third homeless man digging through a garbage container. He was trying to find some food. As I observed him, I remembered the story of The Good Samaritan.

If you are not familiar with The Good Samaritan, it was a story told by Jesus in reply to the question “and who is my neighbor, teacher?” I have posted Jesus’s response below:

Letter of Resolution

Do you know the #1 reason why most New Year’s resolutions don’t pan out? Most people don’t hold themselves accountable. In fact, 95% of the people that make New Year’s resolutions, don’t even write them down. Most people think about their goals and they implement strategies to achieve those goals, but because they don’t hold themselves accountable, they give up when things get tough. That’s when they’ll offer excuses like, “I just don’t have the time right now” or “I tried, but it is just too hard – I’ll try again next year.” They’ll give up because they haven’t made a true commitment to themselves. Instead of joining the quitters, differentiate yourself from them. When you decide on a goal you want to achieve, hold yourself accountable. Write yourself a letter of resolution.

A letter of resolution is a contract you make with yourself that keeps you on the path to achieving your goal. Your letter of resolution is the tangible form of your commitment to yourself. It acts as your beacon of support against the overwhelming challenges on the path to achieving your goal. It’s the reminder that says, “I signed up for this. I knew it would be challenging when I signed up, but I will stick with it because of all the benefits coming my way.” Thus by writing your goal down on paper, you’re programing your subconscious mind to work on achieving that goal. It’s a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Before I describe the cons of the raw food diet, I must say that I am still strongly in favor of eating at least 80% raw foods for life. The Raw Food Diet Experiment is ABSOLUTELY one of the BEST things I have done for my health. I wasn’t sick before, but the physical, mental, and emotional improvements that resulted from going on the raw food diet are unbelievable. You have to try it for yourself!

Although I strongly support the raw food diet, I’m not going to talk about just the positives. I’m sharing the cons here so that you can see some of the obstacles you’ll encounter if you decide to try the raw food diet. I find it highly unusual that some people will only share the good stuff. I believe you should be positive and optimistic in life, but to ignore anything that’s not positive reeks of a lack of consciousness. That’s not how I roll, so I’ve decided to include the Raw Food Diet Cons:

After completing the Raw Food Diet Experiment, I made a list of the pros I experienced during the raw food diet. If you are still on the fence about starting your own 30 day raw food diet experiment, this list may just be the nudge you need. I’ve sent it to a few of my friends and two have decided to go raw for 30 Days. If the list is helpful to you, please let me know by making a donation. It is appreciated and will ensure that I will be able to continue doing more experiments in the future - all of which I will post for your benefit. And now, the Raw Food Diet Pros:

A few of you, who followed the Raw Food Diet Experiment, have asked me questions on how to start becoming raw foodists. Although I am no longer on the 100% raw foodist path (I’m currently at 70-80% raw foods), I have walked it and I have a few suggestions in mind. Rather then respond to each e-mail individually, I’ve decided to write an article for those of you who are eager to start the journey. Although there are numerous ways to become raw foodists, I found these ten to be the most helpful. Enjoy!
